The cockerel represents farm animals and birds. It is attached to an open fetterlock which symbolises the release of animals from traps, cages, fighting and cruelty in general. The shield is supported by a dog, representing companion animals, and a fox, representing wild animals.
The portcullis on the shield symbolises parliament; through constant and effective parliamentary lobbying, the RSPCA has helped introduce most of the significant animal welfare legislation over the last 170 years. The golden drops represent mercy and also the money which our generous supporters give to enable us to carry on our work.
The motto ‘Respice Misericordiam’ means ‘shows mercy.’
